Call For New Members for Friends of Trinity Bellwoods

What’s the Steering Committee?
One year ago, in April of 2006, the former chairpersons of Friends of Trinity Bellwoods, decided to step down and retire after 5 years of duty. The current Steering Committee represents an effort by a six people to restructure Friends of Trinity Bellwoods into five committees, namely, 1) Green Space, 2) Recreation Centre Committee, 3) Playground and Outdoor Activities, 4) Outreach and Events and 5) The Farmer’s Market Committee. Each person on the Steering Committee runs a committee and may or may not hold an office such as chairperson, secretary, or treasurer.

Why Are New Members Important?
Friends of Trinity Bellwoods is an all-volunteer group made up of members of the surrounding neigbourhood. Many of us have dreams for the park that are not commensurate with the time involved in realizing those dreams. We need new members to help us realize existing goals but also to suggest ways of improving the park that we haven’t thought of yet.

Which Positions Are Available?
The Chairpersons of Green Space, Playgrounds, Events and Outreach, and the Recreation Centre Committee are all seeking Committee Co-Chairpersons. The Secretary is also seeking a Co-Secretary. If you would like to be the Chairperson of Friends of Trinity Bellwoods, we ask that you work with the Steering Committee for one year prior to applying for that position. In addition to Steering Committee members, we also need Active Committee Members who take on one task, such as “Postering for Outreach/Events” but do not need to attend the Steering Committee Meetings. If you would like to offer your time on a limited basis as an Active Committee Member, please contact the Committee Chairpersons listed below.

What Kind Of Time Commitment Is Required?
To participate in the Steering Committee, we ask that you make a one-year commitment to the position because it takes a few months to learn how to do the job well. Part of the job of a committee chairperson is to build relationships with City Officials and that takes time. In terms of meetings, the Steering Committee meets on Tuesday evenings from 7-8:30 PM every other month at the Trinity Recreation Centre. In addition, there are four community meetings per year, also at the Recreation Centre In total, you can assume about ten meetings per year as well as any additional work you do outside those meetings. That “additional work” can range from a few hours a month to a few hours a week, depending on your availability. It is also helpful if you can participate in a Spring and Fall Park Day and Clean-Up Day.
