TO THOSE WHO MIGHT WISH TO WEED ON SUNDAY:
The burdock is close to going to seed!! But if we cut it down now, we can prevent lots of re-growth this year, and re-seeding for next year (and burrs on dogs, etc.)
Last weekend we cut down masses of plants up to 6 feet tall and 3 feet wide on the south east slope of the pit. Beneath those big leaves we found all sorts of pretty shrubs and wildflowers growing. We hope they will thrive if the burdock gives them some space.
This weekend we woud like to get the rest of 'em. We will start on the south slope of the pit where you can see a hillside of burdock just below the shrubs. After that, anywhere else we find it! If you can come, write
to let us know. Bring gloves and heavy duty clippers - stems are 1-2" thick.
Here is some important info forwarded to you from The Friends of Christie Pits Park and supported by The Friends of Trinity Bellwoods Park.
Hi all,
Although the temporary dump site at Christie Pits Park is not accepting any new garbage, we still feel strongly that NO PARK should be used as dumps during this strike. Moss Park is a large park located between Jarvis and Sherbourne north of
Queen St. E. Moss Park is surrounded by Toronto's largest homeless community including Fred Victor Centre, Salvation Army and Good Sheppard. There are many low income buildings that surround the park and it is also home of the John
"With spring come the weeders! Once again those notorious guerilla weeders will be back in the park beds. If you also get itchy fingers when you see those weeds feel free to join us (most) Sunday mornings from 9:30 to 11 starting May 3rd, 2009. You'll find us with tools in our hands and a garden waste bag nearby or you can contact Michaelle and Patricia,
yukon99@rogers.com or patricia.cavanagh@uhn.on.ca."
PS - Clean Up Day in the Park, tomorrow 10am to 12 noon. It's nothing to give even 15 minutes of your time to pick up some of that stuff left on the ground by.....litter bugs. Meet us at the back of the Rec Centre to pick up any supplies you need. We can also assign you an 'official' sector!

The Friends of Trinity Bellwoods Park will be meeting at the Rec Centre (front and/or back entrance) to partake in the Mayor's Annual Community Clean Up Day. It's a great way to welcome the warmer weather and contribute, with your neighbours, towards keeping our Park clean and safe. So come on out, even if for half an hour, every bit counts!
Check in with us for for a designated area to clean up. Or just clean up at will. We'll have garbage bags, but please feel free to bring your own recycled plastic bags from home. Once your bag(s) are filled, bring them to back of the Rec Centre to the main garbage pile.
Look forward to your help! Oh ya, we be doing it rain or shine.
The Friends would like to give a huge thank you to all the generous and committed community volunteers that came out to help clean up the park this past Saturday. You were a modest crew (and you know who you are!), but hard-core to the bone in your care for our green space. This is real 'front-line' work that most shy away from, but not you guys! We enjoyed seeing the familiar faces and warmly welcomed the new ones. Hope you'll find yourself at Spring Park Day on May 31st. Won't be no garbage picking up, nope. It'll be fun stuff like mulching, planting etc. Stay tuned.....
SUNDAY MAY 31st, 10am to 1pm. It's the Friends annual Spring Park Day. Come one, come all to help us mulch and plant our lives away in the park! Rain or shine. For more info contact: greenspace@trinitybellwoods.ca

Hello,
I'm planning a workshop/plant-along this Saturday, March 28 at 1:30 pm in the greenhouse with my community group. We'll need some time to discuss what we're going to grow etc between us but anyone is welcome to come out and start seeds along with us. I'll be going through the basics of seed starting and long term seedling care. I'll also bring along a chart I've drawn up for this year listing what needs to be started when, and walk you through any plants that can be direct seeded outdoors to save shelf space.
I've got a small box of seeds that I am happy to share. I've got a pretty wide variety of seeds; however, we are specifically missing broccoli, cauliflower, and other brassicas so if you have extras to share we would be VERY appreciative.
See you there!
Gayla
